TROTTER signifie, familièrement et par extension, Marcher à petits pas rapides. On le voit trotter toute la journée. Les souris trottent dans le grenier.

On entendrait une souris trotter se dit pour exprimer qu’On n’entend pas le plus léger bruit.

TROTTER signifie aussi, figurément et familièrement, Faire beaucoup de courses, de démarches pour quelque affaire. Il y a longtemps que je trotte pour cette affaire-là.

Fig., Cette idée lui trotte dans la tête, par la tête, Cette idée l’occupe et il y pense souvent.

TROTTER s’emploie comme verbe transitif dans cette expression de Manège : Trotter un cheval à la longe.
